FRISCO – After a sparkling performance on Saturday night against Stetson, Sam Houston State junior Hayden Wesneski has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, per a release from league officials on Tuesday.
Wesneski was brilliant in his season opener for the second straight season, dominating in a Bearkat victory at Stetson on Saturday night in the middle game of the RyCass Classic where the Kats went 2-1.
The Sam Houston right-hander allowed just one run and punched out 11 hitters in 7.1 innings of work against the Hatters, a team that went 48-13 a year ago and advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals.
He needed just 97 pitches to navigate his night, 74 for strikes, before handing the game over to the bullpen with a 3-1 lead. He did now allow a walk until his last hitter of the game, and even pulled off an “immaculate inning” in the third when he punched out the side on a perfect nine pitches.
Wesneski's 11 strikeouts was the most by a SLC player on opening weekend and surpassed his previous career high of eight, set in his 2018 season opener against Kent State.
He and the rest of the Bearkats will now return home for its first series at Don Sanders Stadium this weekend, kicking off the weekend on Friday night with the first of three games against the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at The Don.
