All-SLC Release from Southland Conference
HUNTSVILLE – The Southland Conference Track & Field Indoor regular season may have come to an end, but not without individual recognition for the coach and some of the stellar performers for this indoor season and a trio of men headed to the NCAA Indoor Meet this weekend Birmingham, Ala.
Coach Dave Self was named the Men's Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive year. The announcement comes after a first-place team finish for the men's track team during the SLC Indoor Championships. Coach Self is no stranger to the award but continues to lead the program to titles.
“It is a great honor that I am humbled to receive,” Coach self says about how he's feeling after receiving the award. “It is special because it was voted on by other coaches in the conference.”
Freshman Jo'vaughn Martin was recognized for his outstanding performance in his first Southland Conference Indoor Championships appearance. Martin took home the silver medal in the 60m dash, with his best showing coming in the 200m dash. He placed first in the event and set an SLC meet record crossing the line with a time of 21.07.
“Honestly, this is a true blessing.” Martin said of what it means to win Freshman of the Year. “If you know me then you know the journey to this has not been easy, but I am blessed that I even have the opportunity to run and make my family proud.”
Along with the individual accolade announcements the three national qualifiers have prepped for the upcoming NCAA Division I Indoor Championships.
Senior Chris Jefferson, junior Fabian McCall and sophomore Clayton Fritsch are the three athletes that will represent the program this Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
Fritsch will compete in the pole vault event that will start at 5:30 p.m. McCall will participate in the 60m hurdles at 6:17 p.m. and Jefferson will compete in the 200m dash at 7:07 p.m.
