HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats took both games in the doubleheader against Abilene Christian Friday at the Bearkat Softball Complex.

Brooke Malia, Tiffany Thompson and Kyndal Kutac combined for 11 out of the 17 hits the Kats had on the day. Combining this offensive explosion a long with a 13-strikeout performance in the first game for senior pitcher Lindsey McLeod, the Kats are now 22-19 overall and 13-4 in Southland Conference play.

UP NEXT – The Kats will try to close the weekend out with a sweep over ACU at 7 p.m. Saturday.

GAME 1

Sam Houston State 10, Abilene Christian 0 (5 innings)

The bats for Sam Houston got going early, plating three in the bottom of the first inning, with the highlight being Brooke Malia's two-run shot to right field. Tiffany Thompson homered in the bottom of the third, which helped the Kats lead 4-0 until the bottom of the fifth when a six-run fifth inning would help end the game early and give Sam Houston a run-rule win.

In the fifth, Thompson and Malia both had doubles to right field, and Kyndal Kutac followed with a two-run home run to left field.

Thompson's big game Friday follows a stellar performance from Tuesday's game against UT-Arlington, where she went 2 for 3 with a bunt single and a home run, her first of the season.

ACU just couldn't get the bat on the ball with senior pitcher Lindsey McLeod in the circle. McLeod had another shutout performance, fanning 13 with three hits and no runs.

Game 2

Sam Houston State 5, Abilene Christian 4

The second game of the doubleheader started out similar to the first.

Sam Houston scored first, plating two runs off of three hits. Megan McDonald started the first inning with a double to left field, followed by an infield single from Tiffany Thompson. A two-run single to right field from Brooke Malia followed.

The Kats would lead 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth when Kyndal Kutac hit her second home run of the day, her seventh of the season.

Sam Houston plated two more in the bottom of the fifth off of four hits. Karlee Canada hit a single while Thompson and Malia both had doubles. The two runs in the fifth would prove to be vital insurance runs because the Wildcats had a four-run sixth inning after two consecutive walks and a hit by pitch led to a grand slam from ACU's Kayla Keeling.

Freshman Regan Dunn was in the circle for the Kats, pitching six innings with four hits, four runs, three walks and six strikeouts to improve to 6-5 on the season. Lindsey McLeod came into the game in the seventh and recorded the save, helping the Kats close the game out with a 5-4 victory.
