HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State pole vaulter Clayton Fritsch was named the Southland Conference track athlete of the week on Wednesday, according to an announcement from league officials.
The sophomore from Sealy, Texas continued a remarkable outdoor campaign with a record-setting performance during the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, California over the weekend.
Fritsch posted a mark of 5.57m (18' 3.25”) in the pole vault and placed third behind two reigning NCAA champions. The performance meant more than where he placed. The jump not only set a personal record for Fritsch but also set a new school record.
The jump supplanted a record set by Randy Flach during the 2005 outdoor season. Flach posted a mark of 18' 0.5”.
Along with setting records, the mark has Fritsch sixth in the country and first overall in the Southland Conference.
The Bearkats will see action once again for the Southland Outdoor Championships that will take place from May 3rd to May 5th in Natchitoches, La.
