Kats second, seventh after Day 1

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Sam Houston State Bearkat men's and women's track and field teams each turned in strong performances on Day 1 of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships on Friday at the Walter P. Ledet Track Complex.
The Bearkat men sit in second place with 23 points after the opening day of competition while the women sit in seventh with 11 points following a day that saw eight league champions crowned.
Sam Houston's men got the bulk of its points from the hammer throw where Joshua Hernandez locked up a gold medal performance with a throw of 60.23m on his final attempt of the day. The Kats also claimed second place with Aaron Akens tossing 59.75, on his second attempt.
Additionally, the Kats got two more points in the event from Brian Orlando's seventh-place finish and three more points from Alex Hernandez who came in sixth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:02.63.

Tyler Adams currently leads the decathlon with 3,955 total points, just ahead of UIW's Rodney Littlejohn. The senior finished in the top four of each of the five events he competed in on Friday, including winning the decathlon's high jump with a leap of 2.12m.

On the women's side, the Kats got two points each from Margaret Lasalle and Cameron Boedeker in the pole vault as each cleared 3.72m to finish sixth. But like the men, the Kats got seven of their points on the day in the hammer throw with Lauryn Caldwell scoring six points and finding her way onto the podium with a third-place finish, tossing 55.70m, while Alexis Sacky also registered a point with an eighth-place finish.

Day 2 of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. with running events to start at 2:30 p.m. due to weather in the area.
