Bearkats fall in Arkansas

CONWAY, Ark. — The Sam Houston State men's basketball team fell on the road at Central Arkansas 89-82 Saturday afternoon at the Farris Center.
The Bearkats led by as many as five points with six minutes left in the game but could not keep the Bears at bay to fall to 4-2 in Southland Conference action and 11-6 overall.
Senior Dainan Swoope scored a team-high 20 points, while senior Chad Bowie chipped in 18. Senior Kai Mitchell and junior Demarkus Lampley scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Bears shot 44 percent from the floor to improve to 3-3 in conference and 5-12 overall.
Sam Houston State hit 11 of 29 from 3-point range, but UCA doubled up the Bearkats at the free-throw line, going 33 of 38 compared to 15 of 22. UCA also outrebounded SHSU 47-28.
The game was back and forth early in the opening period, but UCA picked things up and was able to build a lead. The Bears hit 5 of 12 3-point attempts and used an 11-4 run in the final two and a half minutes to go into the break up 42-33.
The Bearkats shot just 34 percent from the floor and 25 from 3 (3 of 12) in the first half.
Sam Houston State continues its three-game road swing at Lamar on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
