Kats ranked 30th in preseason USTFCCCA rankings

The Sam Houston State men's track and field team is projected to be one of the top programs in the nation this season, according to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Bearkats are ranked No. 30 in the 2020 NCAA Division I Men's Indoor Track & Field Preseason National Rating Index. SHSU has 30.66 points in the rating index, with sophomore Jo'Vaughn Martin accounting for a combined 6.09 in the 60- and 200-meter runs, senior Fabian McCall with 8.81 in the 60-meter hurdles and junior Clayton Fritsch with 15.75 in the pole vault.
"Preseason rankings in track is like those in any other sport, they don't matter much," assistant coach Cutter Bernhard said. "However, we are extremely excited about the preseason ranking and happy for the student-athletes to gain some well-deserved recognition for their commitment to becoming a top 20 national team."
The Bearkats won their fourth straight Southland Conference Indoor Championship last season. Martin won the 200 and placed second in the 60, and McCall took gold in the 60-meter hurdles.
Martin, McCall and Fritsch all qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships last year.
Both the SHSU men's and women's teams open the 2020 indoor season at Texas A&M's Ted Nelson Invitational Friday and Saturday in College Station.
"We are excited to get the season started January 18," Bernhard said. "We had a great fall semester training and most importantly staying healthy. The Southland Conference is a premiere mid-major conference in the country and like every year the first goal on the goal sheet is to win conference championships and second is to qualify as many student-athletes as possible to the NCAA national championships."
Florida State comes in first in the USTFCCCA ratings with 152.35 points, while LSU is second at 127.03 points followed by No. 3 Southern California (91.93), No. 4 Texas (91.74) and No. 5 Indiana (86.15), No. 6 Texas A&M, No. 7 Arkansas, No. 8 Florida, No. 9 Colorado and No. 10 Oregon to round out the top-10 in the 2020 Preseason.
The next National TFRI will be released on Jan. 27 and will continue all season long until the 2020 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held on March 13-14 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
