When the Sam Houston bowling team hits the lanes for their season opening tournament on Nov. 6 at Louisiana Tech, they will be in a position they have never been before. The Kats will have the distinction of being the first Sam Houston team to participate in an official competition this fall.Â
Â
The Kats will head to Ruston, La., to take part in the La Tech Invitational for the first of seven scheduled regular season events this season.
Â
"Everything is flexible and fluid for us right now and contingent on event protocols, state to state guidelines and CDC components," said head coach Brad Hagen. "But we are excited to get back out and compete. With the way things ended for us last year I know the girls are ready to get back out there."
Â
Last year's season was cut short just before the Southland Conference Championships as the No. 2 ranked Bearkats were preparing for another trip to the NCAA Finals. Hagen said it is important to put all of that behind them and focus on the path ahead.Â
Â
"We have something to focus our attention on and to look forward to which we haven't had since the beginning of March," he said. "Our immediate goal is to continue training at a high level utilizing our resources and to compete at a high level no matter the field size."
Â
Not only are there fewer competition dates, the tournament fields will be smaller as well. A typical event usually consists of 14 to 20 teams. This season the sizes will be much smaller. Hagen expects the first two events of the year to only have between six to eight squads.
Â
After the season opener, Sam Houston will host the TRACK Kat Klash, however it will be a new house this year. The tournament moves closer to Huntsville, taking place at Time 2 Spare in Conroe from Nov. 20-22. That is also the same location for the Southland Championship March 19-21.
Â
The Kats will return to action on January 22 when they head to the Columbia 300 Saint Invite in Valley Park, Mo., and the following weekend will be at USA Bowl in Dallas for the PVA&M Invitational. It's the first of back-to-back events at USA Bowl as the Kats return on Feb 12th for the Bull Dog Classic.Â
Â
The final two events of the regular season are familiar stops for the Kats, heading to the Mid-Winter Invitational, hosted by Arkansas State on Feb. 19 and then wrap up the year at Vanderbilt's Music City classic on March 5. Â
Â
"How we get to the post season may be a little different road but we are completely open, willing, and able to tackle every obstacle that is thrown at us to get to where we want to go," Hagen said. "Putting ourselves in a position to achieve success and win championships is what the process is all about."
Â
This year's postseason will also have a different look for the Bearkats. This season, the NCAA will send 16 teams to the postseason splitting them up into four regional sites. This season, New Orleans, Arlington, Lansing, Mich., and Erie, Pa., will serve as the four regional host sites with North Kansas City, Mo., the host of the NCAA Finals. Â
