The Sam Houston bowlers had an uncharacteristic start to the Mid Winter Classic hosted by Arkansas State on Friday. The Bearkats posted a 2-3 record and sit in 10th place after the first day of competition.

The Kats topped 1,000 pins just once on the day, knocking down 1,039 in their third match of the day. Their wins came against Upper Iowa and No. 15 Wisconsin Whitewater. They finished with a total pinfall of 4,703.Â

McKendree and Vanderbilt are leading the pack, but the next eight spots in the standings are tightly compact with 271 pins separating third-place Nebraska and the 10-place Kats. The top four teams after Saturday will advance to the championship bracket on Sunday.
