BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Sam Houston State men are in fourth and the women are in ninth following the first day of the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex Sunday.

Through six events, the men have accumulated 23 points, which trails Stephen F. Austin (36), Southeastern Louisiana (33) and Abilene Christian (29). The women have 14 points behind SFA (44.75), Northwestern State (25), Abilene Christian (23), Lamar (22), Southeastern Louisiana (20.75), McNeese (18.75), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (18) and Houston Baptist (18).

Zachary Johnson won the silver in the men's long jump to highlight action for the men with a leap of 7.28 meters to earn 8 points.

On the women's side, Shaynea Redmond also took home the silver in the long jump with a distance of 5.78 meters.

The men's distance medley squad of Sergio Armendariz, Cameron Brown, Joe Austin III and Andrew Bosquez captured fourth with a time of 10:06.03 to earn five points. Cade Skuza also placed fourth in the pole vault with a personal-best height of 5.06 meters.

Daveon Thomas came in sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 16.68 meters to earn three points. Austin Zirkel placed seventh in the 5,000-meter run to earn two points with a time of 14:45.09, which was a personal best.

The women's distance medley team of Haley Garza, Teona Spivey, Sandy Clarkin and Cryslan Tucker finished fifth with a time of 12:25.84 to earn four points.

Rachel Smith earned two points with a seventh-place showing in the weight throw with a mark of 16.47 meters.

Field event finals begin Monday at 10 a.m. with the women's shot put, and the running event finals are set for 11 a.m. with the women's 60-meter hurdles.
