NEW ORLEANS — The Sam Houston State tennis team won four of the six singles matches to top UNO 4-3 in a Southland Conference dual match at the University Tennis Center Sunday.
The Bearkats improved to 2-0 in SLC action this season and 7-4 on the season following Sunday's victory. SHSU opened the conference slate with a 7-0 win at Nicholls Friday.
After the Privateers took the doubles point 2-1, the Bearkats had the upper hand in singles play.
Roos Gerritsen defeated Lea Alguacil 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 spot to tie the match.
Emma Goedkoop put SHSU up 2-1 when she topped Claudette Gilhespie 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.
Isidora Zivkovic defeated Salma Abdelrahim 6-2, 7-5 for a point in the No. 2 position, and
Karla De La Luz Montalvo sealed the victory for the Kats with a 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 win in No. 3 singles.
Sahaja Yamalapalli fell to Ank Vullings 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot, and
Lusine Chobanyan also lost in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to Mar Gendra at No. 4 singles.
Gerritsen and Chobanyan won their No. 1 doubles match against Tristanne Dechoux and Yurina Asai 6-2.
The Bearkats return to action Friday when they host Abilene Christian at the McAdams Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
