Top Bearkat Moments Bracket Announced

With no sports on the horizon, over the next few weeks we are going to take a look back at some of the most memorable moments, games, athlete achievements and championships in Sam Houston history since the move to Division I in 1986.

In a March Madness style bracket, Bearkat fans will get the chance to vote on the Bearkats official twitter account @BearkatSports for their favorites and the winner of each match up will move on to the next round. The dates for each round will be roughly the same as the NCAA Tournament, beginning Wednesday with four play-in matchups and concluding with the Final Four and championship voting April 4-6.

The bracket is broken up into four regions, The Players, The Games, The Championships and The Moments. The Players bracket covers the top achievements of our athletes. The Games will include memorable finishes, significant wins and historical victories. The Championships are team achievements and The Moments is kind of catch-all category that may cover several games or player moments and achievements into one "moment."

To help with the selection and seeding of the matchups, three longtime media members who have covered Sam Houston athletics for a good part of the time covered assisted with the process. Kooter Roberson was the long-time voice of the Bearkats and was on the call for many of these iconic moments. Brian Lacy started as a student assistant in the sports information department in 1995 and worked in some aspect of the media covering the Kats until 2008. Cody Stark started as a reporter for the Houstonian in 2002 and later joined the Huntsville Item in 2004 where he worked until joining the Sam Houston athletic department in 2019. All three will join Jason Barfield on the Chasing the Cup podcast to discuss their selection process.

Each week, Chasing the Cup will recap the voting from the fans and take a look at the next round's matchups. Our selection committee members will join us with their thoughts on each round and there might be a few other special guests along the way.Â

Voting is live now for the four play-in matchups while the first-round voting will get started on Thursday and will run through Sunday for the second-round matchups.Â
