Five Kats earn SLC T&F academic honors

FRISCO — Several members of the Sam Houston State men's and women's track and field teams have been selected to the 2020 All-Southland Conference Academic teams, the league announced Tuesday.

Senior Cade Skuza and juniors Clayton Fritsch and Austin Zirkel made it on the men's side, and senior Rebeca Gonzalez and junior Sandy Clarkin were named to the women's squad.

To qualify, student-athletes must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average.
Â
This is the second time Fritsch has been named to the SLC academic team. He has a 3.25 grade point average in construction management and qualified for the 2020 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the pole vault but was unable to compete due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Fritsch, who made the Dean's List in the fall, placed first in the pole vault at the Ted Nelson Invitational to open the indoor season in January. He also had the top height at the Howie Ryan Invitational, and he placed second at the Red Raider Invitational.

Skuza has a 3.85 GPA in construction management and made the President's List in the fall. He placed fourth in the pole vault with a personal-best height of 5.06 meters at the SLC Indoor Championships. List in the fall.

Zirkel placed seventh in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:45.09, which was a personal best, at the SLC Indoor Championships. He placed seventh in the 3,000-meter run at the Texas A&M Twilight.

Gonzalez placed sixth in the mile run at the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 5:06.64 to earn three points. The health care administration major has made the President's List every semester she has been at SHSU with a perfect 4.00 GPA.

Clarkin finished sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.27, and she was on the distance medley team that placed fifth with a time of 12:25.84 at the SLC Indoor Championships. The kinesiology major with a 3.94 GPA was on the distance medley team that placed fifth with a time of 12:24.33 at the Howie Ryan Invitational, and she made the President's List in the fall.
