HUNTSVILLE – A pair of Bearkats on the summer circuit – Anthony MacKenzie and Clayton Chadwick - earned spots on the Sunflower Collegiate League All-Star Team on Monday, when league officials made the announcement.
Â
The all-star game for the Kansas-based league will take place July 25th at Eck Stadium, the home of the Wichita State Shockers, at 7:00 p.m.
Â
MacKenzie and Chadwick, each coming off true freshman seasons with the Kats, have gotten off to a great start for the Hutchinson Monarchs. Their squad has gotten off to a 21-4 start to the summer and is just one game out of first place in the league standings.
Â
For MacKenzie, the switch-hitting infielder has hit .388 with four doubles and eight RBI through 20 games for the Monarchs. But he's been a menace on the bases, walking 22 times to aid a .538 on-base percentage, while adding 17 stolen bases and 23 runs scored.
Â
The Houston native started all 14 games for the Kats in the middle infield as a true freshman in 2020 before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He scored seven runs and had three extra-base hits in 56 at-bats in that span.
Â
Meanwhile, Chadwick is taking full advantage of being able to get back on the field this summer. The Kats had high expectations for him going into 2020, but he was injured after just three at-bats of the season and did not have the opportunity to return to the lineup before the year as brought to a halt by the pandemic.
Â
But his time with the Monarchs has been well spent as he has hit .377 in 53 at-bats over 18 games. He has scored 19 runs in that span, while also showing plenty of power with six doubles, three triples, three home runs and nine RBI. His .774 slugging percentage and 1.250 OPS each rank in the top three in the league to date.
