HAMMOND, La. — The Sam Houston men's basketball team was stingy defensively and got off to another hot start offensively to hand Southeastern Louisiana a 70-52 loss at the University Center Wednesday night.
Senior
Demarkus Lampley continued to knock down clutch shots for the Bearkats (8-5, 2-0 in Southland Conference) by scoring a game-high 21 points and pulling down seven rebounds as SHSU stretched its winning streak to five. Junior
Zach Nutall scored 17 points and freshman
Bryce Monroe chipped in 10.
The Kats held the Lions to just 34.7 percent shooting from the floor and 15.8 percent from behind the arc. SHSU also turned 17 Southeastern Louisiana turnovers into 18 points and never trailed in the game.
Nutall came out on fire to start the game, scoring 15 points on five of seven shooting from 3-point range as Sam Houston took a 37-19 lead into halftime. As a team, the Bearkats shot 45.2 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from long range in the opening period.
The Lions went on a run in the second half and got as close as 11, but every time Southeastern Louisiana would look like it was getting back in it, Sam Houston would answer.
Lampley scored 15 of his points in the second half, and Monroe scored all of his in the final 20 minutes.
The Bearkats continue their three-game road trip to open SLC play at Central Arkansas on Saturday at 4 p.m.
