Kats drop second straight in SLC play
1/6/2021 8:57:00 PM | Women's Basketball
HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkat women's basketball team made a late run, but came up just short to Southeastern Louisiana as the Lady Lions escaped with a 71-67 win on Wednesday night at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The Kats (4-4, 0-2 SLC) held a narrow 41-39 lead at the break, but SLU (3-2, 2-0 SLC) took control with an 11-1 run to close out the third quarter and then held on in the game's final minutes. SLU led 69-60 with just over three minutes to play before the Kats reeled off seven straight points; however, that was as close as it would get.
Jolicia Williams and Amber Leggett each led the way with a game-high 17 points while Faith Cook added 13 points on 10-for-10 shooting from the foul line.
Cierra Cunningham and Aly Giaratano also each tallied 17 points apiece for SLU.
The Lady Lion defense was a menace to the Kats all night as they held SHSU to just 34 percent shooting from the field, but also just 1-for-13 from beyond the 3-point line.
Sam Houston will look to put an end to its 2-game losing skid when it travels to Central Arkansas on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from the Farris Center.
