Smith named WAC Offensive Player of the Week

DENVER, Colo. – Sam Houston running back Noah Smith was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, per a release from league officials.

It is the first such honor of Smith's career and is the third time a Bearkat has been named the week's top offensive player this season, joining quarterbacks Eric Schmid and Keegan Shoemaker who have done so each of the past two weeks.

The Cypress native had one of his biggest games as a Bearkat on Saturday in a dominating 41-7 win over Lamar, rushing for 119 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

It was the first 100-yard rushing game of his career, which was buoyed by a career-long 49-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that essentially put the game away. His day paced the Kats on an afternoon that saw them rush for 267 yards against the Cardinals.

Smith now has 257 yards on 43 rushes this season and a pair of scores, all marks that rank second on the team.

He and the rest of the top-ranked Kats will observe their second bye week of the season this week before returning to action next week in a highly-anticipated game against nationally-ranked Jacksonville State.

That game, which will be homecoming at Sam Houston, is set for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff and will be aired on ESPN+.
