MBB picked 7th in preseason WAC polls

DENVER — The Sam Houston men's basketball team has been picked to finish seventh in both the media and coaches preseason Western Athletic Conference polls.

Senior Demark Lampley has been selected to the media's first team All-WAC preseason team, and he was named to the coaches' second team along with teammate Savion Flagg, a graduate transfer from Texas A&M.

New Mexico State is the preseason favorite to win the Western Athletic Conference men's basketball title in 2021-22 by vote of the 13 head coaches, who could not vote for their own team. The Aggies received eight of 13 possible first-place votes and totaled 138 points to earn the top spot followed by Grand Canyon (three first-place votes, 131 points), Stephen F. Austin (one, 106), Utah Valley (103), Abilene Christian (one, 92), Seattle (90), Sam Houston (86), California Baptist (84), Tarleton and UTRGV (48), Lamar (41), Dixie State (35) and Chicago State (12).

The media also selected New Mexico State to finish first followed by SFA, Grand Canyon, ACU, Utah Valley, California Baptist, Sam Houston, Seattle, Tarleton, Lamar, UTRGV, Dixie State and Chicago State.

Lampley was a first-team All-Southland Conference selection last season and was named to the NABC Division I All-District 22 second team. He averaged 14.7 points per game, which was 11th in the SLC and he was second 3-point shooting percentage at 39.9 percent.

Flagg averaged 8.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists this past season for the Aggies. In four seasons at Texas A&M, he averaged 9.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists.
