ABILENE — Abilene Christian scored on a free kick in overtime to hand the Sam Houston soccer team a 2-1 loss at Elmer Gray Stadium on Friday night.
The loss drops the Bearkats to 6-9 overall and 4-4 in Western Athletic Conference action. The Wildcats improved to 5-7-1 and 3-3-1.
Sam Houston got on the board first in the 65th minute.
Alexis Truitt was streaking down the right side of the field and sent a beautiful cross just to the front left of the goal. Landri Townsend was in perfect position and punched the ball into the left side of the net.
The Wildcats answered five minutes later when a cross ricocheted off one of the Bearkat defenders and went directly to Laura Mauldin in front of the goal. She was able to get it past keeper Tatum Krueger for the equalizer.
The teams played to a draw the rest of regulation, but ACU's Ellen Joss scored a golden goal in the top left corner of the net just under two minutes into the extra period to seal the victory.
The Bearkats stay on the road to play at Chicago State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
