Kats explode for five goals in win

HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston soccer team got into a rhythm offensively to cruise to a 5-0 victory over Chicago State at Pritchett Field on Friday night.

The Bearkats (4-7 overall, 2-2 in WAC) scored the most goals in a match all season, doubling their season total with an impressive showing against the Cougars (0-10-1, 0-4).

After Chicago State goalkeeper Alexia Seiler was ejected 30 seconds into the match when she was given a red card, Sam Houston pounced. Grace Stine put the Bearkats up 1-0 when a shot ricocheted off the backup keeper, and she punched the ball to the back left side of the net in the fourth minute.

Brooke Jones scored her first goal of the season in the 29th minute. Jade Dewbre played the ball up to Landri Townsend who crossed the ball into the middle of the box for Jones to pop it into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Summer Knox created her own scoring opportunity in the 42nd minute. She tracked down the ball at the top of the box and soared it into the top-right corner to make it 3-0.

Alexis Truitt scored her second goal of the season on a similar play to Stine's score. She got a ricochet on a shot and turned it into another point in the 70th minute.

Dewbre was on the receiving end of some great passing to increase the lead to 5-0 in the 85th minute. Townsend played the ball up, and Dewbre toe poked it to the right of the sliding keeper for the final score of the night.

Keeper Abby DeLozier finished with three saves as the Bearkats limited the Cougars to just three shots.

Sam Houston returns to action Sunday when it hosts Abilene Christian at 1 p.m.
