HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkats dropped a pair both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday to Southeastern Louisiana at Pat Kennelly Diamond at Alunni Field.
The Lions (10-4, 3-0 SLC) picked up both wins in walk-off fashion to secure a series win.
The Kats will look to salvage a game in the series on Sunday in the finale. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. and will be aired on ESPN+.
Game 1
Southeastern 3, Sam Houston 2 (7 innings)
Sam Houston got a strong performance from starter
Matt Dillard who tossed 5.2 innings, striking out seven with just one run allowed on his way to a no-decision.
A 2-run single by
Gavin Johnson gave the Kats a 2-0 lead in the opening inning, but SLU starter Will Warren went on to hold the Kats without a hit the rest of the way, earning his third win of the year in a 9-strikeout performance.
SLU was able to get a run back in the sixth on an RBI single by Christian Garcia before
Alex Havlicek closed out the inning with a strikeout. But it was the seventh that turned out to be the toughest for the Kats as SLU loaded the bases on a pair of hit batters and a bunt single, tying the game on a sacrifice bunt.
Two batters later the Lions walked it off as Eli Johnson became the third Lion of the inning to be hit by a pitch, doing so with the bases loaded to score Jacob Burke with the winning run.
Game 2
Southeastern 7, Sam Houston 6
Jack Rogers hit a 3-run home run with two outs in the ninth inning, but the Lions got an RBI single by Johnson in the bottom of the ninth to walk the Kats off for the second straight game.
The Kats had trailed 3-0 before tying it up on a 2-run single by
Corbin Vines and a Lion error in the seventh. But SLU answered right back with another 3-spot in the eighth on RBI by Preston Faulkner, Garcia and Nathan Tribble.
That put SLU in prime position to close it out, but Rogers extended things with his 3-run shot off of Hughes over the right-center field fence. Cole Hoskins came in to get the last out of the ninth and ended up as the winning pitcher after Johnson scored Evan Keller with an RBI single.
Dominic Robinson was strong in his start, punching out seven hitters in 6.0 innings, allowing just two earned runs.
Lance Lusk took the loss, allowing a run in 0.2 innings of relief work.
