Blankenzee sweeps Southland honors

Denise Blankenzee was named the Southland Bowling League Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, marking the first time in Southland Bowling League history someone has taken both awards.

Blankenzee, a freshman from Julianadorp, Netherlands, has been a steady force for the Bearkats this season. She earned all-tournament honors in five events this season.

"Denise has been a great addition to our team," said head coach Brad Hagen. "She picked things up immediately and has been great for us since day 1. Sometimes the first year in Division I bowling can be tough be she has done exactly what we thought she would be capable of."

She leads the Kats with a 21.09 traditional average and leads the league with 424 strikes. She has converted 52.5 percent of her strike attempts and ranks second in the SBL with a 20.88 individual overall frame average.

Blankenzee has competed in all 808 frames for the 'Kats this season and has accrued a 93.05-percent player composite performance index average along the way. She has helped lead Sam Houston to a No. 8 National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) ranking.

The Bearkats are the five seed at the SBL tournament, where they will take on No. 4 Youngstown State in the opening round.
