HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston softball team closed out an impressive three-game Southland Conference sweep of McNeese with a pair of shutouts Saturday at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
Â
The Bearkats (7-13, 4-2 in SLC) scored four runs in the fourth inning to back freshman Mika Vento's one-hitter in the circle to take game one of the doubleheader 6-0. Sophomore Regan Dunn homered and tossed seven scoreless innings in series finale as Sam Houston topped the Cowgirls 4-0.
Â
It is just the third time in 10 years McNeese (10-17, 2-4) has been swept in a three-game Southland Conference series, and the Bearkats did it by outscoring the Cowgirls 16-1.
Â
Game 2
Sam Houston 6, McNeese 0
The Bearkats busted up a pitching duel by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to secure the series victory in game two Saturday.
Â
Senior Megan McDonald got the inning going with a lead-off walk, and senior Brooklyn Devine followed with a single up the middle. Senior Brooke Malia loaded the bases with a bunt single, and freshman Kylie Hobbs made it 1-0 with an RBI single through the right side.
Â
With two outs, freshman Courtney White hit an infield single to short to bring in another run, and freshman Hannah Schaeffer capped the scoring with a two-run double down the left field line.
Â
Freshman Mika Vento in the meantime, held McNeese to one hit with six strikeouts to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Â
Sam Houston added two more runs in the fifth when freshman Emily Telg stole home and Malia drove in Devine on another bunt single.
Â
Game 3
Sam Houston 4, McNeese 0
The Bearkats scored a run on a three-base error in the bottom of the first inning which would prove to be enough as Sam Houston completed the series sweep in the finale.
Â
Senior Megan McDonald drew a lead-off walk for the second game in a row and came all the way around to score on a throwing error by the pitcher on a ground ball by senior Brooklyn Devine.
Â
Sophomore Regan Dunn helped her own cause in the fifth when she blasted a lead-off home run to right field to make it 2-0. She also tossed a shutout and allowed only three hits to go along with three strikeouts to improve to 4-3 in the circle this season.
Â
Freshman Ellie Grill and sophomore Kyndal Kutac added RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth to cap the scoring.
Â
The Bearkats will host No. 24 Baylor on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
