BEAUMONT - The Sam Houston volleyball team  went into Beaumont Sunday afternoon and came away with a sweep of Lamar, handing the Cardinals a 3-0 defeat at the Montagne Center.
Â
Sam Houston (6-1, 6-1 SLC) went through a back and forth first set with Lamar (1-10, 1-5 SLC), but controlled the next two to complete the sweep. The 27-25, 25-15, 25-21 win gives the Bearkats their sixth straight Southland Conference win of the season and third sweep.
Â
Ashley Lewis led both teams in kills with 13, followed by Catherine Krieger with 10. Morgan Janda led both teams as well with 31 assists and a .545 hitting percentage. Lewis also led the Kats with 19 digs, followed by Hannah Baker with 17.
Â
Lamar got off to an early 4-1 lead in set one, but Sam Houston quickly clawed back and held the lead all the way up until Lamar took it back 18-17. The Cardinals would then go up 23-19 before a 5-0 run by Sam Houston highlighted by a De'Janae Gilmore kill, three errors on the Cardinals, and another kill by Janda gave the Kats a 24-23 lead. From there it was a back-and-forth affair until another attack error on Lamar ended the set in the Kats favor 27-25.
Â
The second and third sets were handled by Sam Houston throughout both. The Kats had a 5-0 run early on in the second set with kills from Breanne Chausse, Krieger, and Lewis that put them up 8-3 and they never looked back, leading the rest of the way and taking the set 25-15. In the third set Lamar held a 15-10 lead at one point but the Kats rallied back with a 5-0 run with two kills from Lewis and eventually took the set 25-21.
