Kats set top marks at A&M Invitational

COLLEGE STATION — Senior Joshua Smith set a school record in the 400-meter hurdles as one of the highlights of the Sam Houston track and field team at the Texas A&M Team Invitational over the weekend.

Smith finished first in the 400 hurdles Friday with a blazing time of 50.31 seconds, which was ahead of sprinters from Texas A&M, Houston, Houston Baptist, Texas Southern, Rice and UTSA. It is the seventh best time in the country this outdoor season and the top time in the Southland Conference, topping Smith's previous mark of 51.28 he registered at the Texas Relays.

Junior Clayton Fritsch continued his impressive start to the outdoor season by tying the E.B. Cushing Stadium record in the pole vault. His winning height of 5.61 meters was 7 ¾ inches better than second place.

Senior Bryan Henderson also had another solid performance in the 100-meter dash. He set a new Cushing Stadium record with a time of 10.38.

Senior Bryan Henderson placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.59. Freshman Cobe Graham had the second-best throw in the shot put with a mark of 16.22 meters, freshman Kevin Kindt was fifth at 15.69 and sophomore Brian Orlando was ninth at 14.57.

Freshman KeAyla Dove captured fourth in the women's shot put with a throw of 14.79 meters.

Sophomore Sasha Elizondo had a personal best time in the 1,500-meter run at 4:39.23, which was good enough for fourth. Junior Rebeca Gonzalez was ninth (4:44.54) and sophomore Cryslan Tucker was 10^th (4:44.62).

Freshman Erin Brown was third in the men's 400 meters with a personal-best time of 48.18, and freshman Cameron Brown was eighth at 48.73. Sophomore Denzel Downing placed sixth in the 110 hurdles with a mark of 14.85.

Orlando took fifth in the hammer throw with a distance of 55.29, sophomore Daveon Thomas was seventh at 50.68 and freshman Luke Thielemann was ninth at 46.89.

Junior Stanley Williams placed sixth in the long jump with a leap of 6.90 meters, and sophomore Steven Gruss was seventh in the high jump at 1.95 meters.

Sophomore Zachary Johnson took eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 14.54 meters, and junior Joshua Hamilton came in ninth at 14.29.

Sophomore Rylan Olguin finished eighth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.91.

Sophomore Haviland Harris placed eighth in the women's 400 hurdles with a time of 1:02.78.

Freshman Charlee Salinas finished 10^th in the discuss with a toss of 43.06 meters. Sophomore Rachel Smith was ninth in the hammer throw with a mark of 48.53 meters, and sophomore Emily Winkler was 10^th at 45.82.

The men's 4x100-meter relay came in second with a time of 40.50. The women's 4x100 relay turned in a season best mark of 46.65 to place sixth.

The women's 4x400 relay was ninth with a time of 3:51.83, and junior Sylvia Freeman finished 10^th in the 400 meters with a mark of 56.56.
