Smith garners SLC weekly track honor

FRISCO — Sam Houston senior Joshua Smith had a record-setting performance at the Texas A&M Team Invitational this past weekend, and the Southland Conference took notice.

Smith has been named the SLC Track Athlete of the Week after breaking the school record on his way to a first-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, league officials announced Wednesday. His blazing time of 50.31 seconds topped sprinters from Texas A&M, Houston, Houston Baptist, Texas Southern, Rice and UTSA.

Smith's mark is the eighth best time in the country this outdoor season and the top time in the Southland Conference, topping his previous mark of 51.28 he registered at the Texas Relays.

Junior Clayton Fritsch was named honorable mention Field Athlete of the Week for his performance at A&M. He tied the E.B. Cushing Stadium record in the pole vault with a winning height of 5.61 meters which was 7 ¾ inches better than second place.
