HAMMOND, La. — Sam Houston could not get anything going offensively to answer a pair of four-run innings in an 8-0 loss to Northwestern State in an elimination game at the Southland Conference Tournament Friday afternoon at North Oak Park.
The Bearkats (19-31) managed just one hit, an infield single to short by senior
Kayte Martinez in the second inning. Senior
Megan McDonald was the only other Sam Houston base runner when she reached on an error in the first.
The Lady Demons (24-21) scored four runs in the third inning when Makenzie Chaffin and Hayley Barbazon singled around an out. Starting pitcher EC Delafield helped her own cause with an RBI single to left-center field to make it 1-0.
Back-to-back walks by starting pitcher
Regan Dunn (8-12) brought in another run. Keely DuBois was hit by a pitch, and Alexi Perry drove in the fourth run on a sacrifice fly.
Chaffin walked to lead off the fourth, Kat Marshall singled and Delafield took a pitch off her right elbow to load the bases. Kaitlyn St. Clair and Jones hit back-to-back two-run doubles to make it 8-0.
Sam Houston failed to score in the bottom of the fourth and fifth to avoid the five-inning run rule.
