Kats finish strong at SLC championships

HUMBLE — The Sam Houston men's and women's track teams wrapped up the 2021 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships with more Bearkats on the medal stand Sunday at Turner Stadium.
The men placed third at the event with 104 points behind champion Stephen F. Austin (104) and Southeastern Louisiana (111). The women placed ninth with 33 points.

Bryan Henderson set a new meet record in his gold-medal performance in the 100-meter dash. His time of 10.11 seconds bested the previous mark of 10.12.

Joshua Smith also brought home gold in the 110 hurdles. He crossed the finish line in 13.79 seconds. He also placed second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 51.01.

Andrew Bosquez brought home the gold medal in the men's 1,500 meters. He topped the field with a time of 3:59.13.

Joe Austin was fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.61. Henderson also earned points by finishing sixth in the 200 meters with a mark of 22.64.

The men had two athletes place in the top eight in the discus. Luke Thielemann was fourth with a distance of 48.03 meters, and Daveon Thomas placed sixth at 47.13. Steven Gruss took fifth in the high jump with a height of 2.01 meters.

The men's 4x400-meter relay was fourth with a mark of 3:12.02 and the 4x100 relay placed seventh with a time of 41.08.

On the women's side, Baylee Lara captured fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.92 seconds, and Haviland Harris was eighth with a time of 14.36 and she was fifth in the 400 hurdles with a mark of 1:01.96.

KeAyla Dove placed seventh in the discus with a throw of 43.31 meters. Sandy Clarkin was eighth in the 800 meters at 2:16.43.

Rebecca Gonzalez came in seventh in the women's 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 11:26.42. The women's 4x100-meter relay was eighth with a time of 47.19
