Kats finish sweep of UIW

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston scored all of its runs in the final two innings to complete a Southland Conference series sweep of Incarnate Word with a 9-1 victory in six innings Saturday at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
Senior Katye Martinez hit an RBI single to walk-off the run-rule win and send the Bearkats (18-29, 14-13 SLC) into the conference tournament with a three-game win streak. Sam Houston will face Houston Baptist in the opening round Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Hammond, Louisiana.
The Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the second inning, but senior starter Darby Fitzpatrick and freshman Mika Vento (8-7) shut down UIW the rest of the way.
The Kats finally broke through offensively in the fifth inning when senior Megan McDonald launched an RBI double to deep center field. Freshman Ellie Grill added an RBI single, and sophomore Kyndal Kutac blasted a solo shot down the left-field line to make it 3-1.
Sam Houston added six more runs in the sixth thanks to an RBI double by Grill, a sacrfice fly by freshman Taylor Bachmeyer, a fielding error, a run-scoring single my senior Brooke Malia and freshman Emily Telg was hit by a pitch to make it 8-1. Martinez then ended it with an infield single to short with the bases loaded.
