T&F athletes garner SLC academic honors

FRISCO — The Sam Houston men's and women's track and field teams placed eight student-athletes on the 2021 indoor and outdoor Southland Conference All-Academic teams, the league office announced Tuesday.
Â
Clayton Fritsch, Denzel Downing, Eric Callaway and Andrew Bosquez were all selected to the men's team, and Allie Angelo, Sandy Clarkin, Halie Daniel and Rebeca Gonzalez were named to the women's team.

Fritsch, who made the Dean's List in the fall, placed first in the pole vault at the SLC Indoor Championships to earn first-team all-conference recognition and finished seventh at the NCAA Indoor Championships to earn first-team All-America honors. He placed second at the SLC Outdoor Championships to land on the all-conference second team and took fourth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to once again earn first-team All-America honors.

Callaway, who made the Dean's List in the fall, and Downing ran on the Bearkats' 4x100-meter relay team that placed 22nd at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships which earned them honorable mention All-America honors. The relay also placed seventh at the SLC Outdoor Championships.

Bosquez won the 1,500-meter run at the 2021 SLC Outdoor Championships to earn first-team all-conference honors. He placed fourth in the 3,000-meter run and seventh in the 5,000 at the 2021 SLC Indoor Championships.

Daniel made the President's List and the Dean's List as a graduate student in the fall. She was third in the shot put at the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, and she placed fifth in the weight throw.

Gonzalez, who made the Presiden't List in the fall, placed seventh in both the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the distance medley relay at the 2021 SLC Indoor Championships.

Angelo, who made the Dean's List in the fall, placed fifth in the pentathlon at the 2021 SLC Indoor Championships. She placed sixth in the heptathlon at the 2021 SLC Outdoor Championships.

Clarkin made the President's and Dean's List in the fall. She placed sixth in the 800-meter run at the 2021 SLC Indoor Championships and placed eighth in the 800 at the 2021 SLC Outdoor Championships.

The all-academic teams are voted on by head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance staff members from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA and have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to qualify for all-academic selection.
