HUNTSVILLE — Landri Townsend scored a golden goal a minute and a half into overtime to lead the Sam Houston soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Grambling at Pritchett Field Friday evening.
The Bearkats (1-2) came back to tie the match when Townsend scored her first goal of the season off an assist by
Katarina Baehren in the 81
st minute. It was SHSU's first goal of the season.
The two teams both had opportunities to end the match in regulation but Bearkat goalkeeper
Abby DeLozier and Lady Tigers' keeper Rachel Pugh made some solid plays to send the match to overtime.
Townsend didn't waste any time ending it.
Grace Stine was able to poke the ball to Townsend off a throw in and she drilled it into the upper-left corner of the net to hand the Bearkats their first victory of the season.
Grambling's goal came midway through the first half when DeLozier fell in the box and Lizbeth Aguero got a shot at a wide-open net.
DeLozier settled in after that and finished with four saves. Townsend finished with three shots on goal,
Jade Dewbre had two and Baehren had one.
The Bearkats will face former Southland Conference opponent McNeese at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at Pritchett Field.
