OREM, Utah – The Sam Houston Bearkats stayed hot and won their third straight match on Saturday, outlasting Utah Valley for a 3-2 win at Lockhart Arena.
Sam Houston (6-12, 3-1 WAC) had no issue in staking itself to a 2-0 lead, but the Wolverines (7-7, 2-1 WAC) fought back with 26-24 wins in each of the next two frames to tie it up and force a decisive fifth set. The fifth set was similar as well, but SHSU was able to fight off a match point and then scored four of the final five points to scratch out a 19-17 win in the finale.
Madison Dyer turned in her first career double-double in the win, scoring 15 kills along with a match-high 10 blocks, having a hand in two-thirds of the 15 rejections the Kats had as a team.
Catherine Krieger also added 15 kills of her own, and both
Alyssa Fielder and
McKenzie Morvant had 10 kills each.
That effort paced an offense that hit .252 as a team, directed by 28 assists from freshman
Avery Fowler and 26 from
Analise Lucio. Fielder added 14 digs for her third straight double-double, leading a trio of Kats in double-figure digs as both Lucio and
Hannah Baker had 11 apiece.
The Kats will continue to stay hot when they return home to open a stretch of four straight home matches, beginning Thursday when they host UTRGV at Johnson Coliseum.
