WAC releases preseason MBB polls

ARLINGTON — The Sam Houston men's basketball team has been picked to finish eighth in coaches' and tied for sixth in the media's preseason 2022-23 Western Athletic Conference polls, the league announced Monday.

Senior Javion May has also been selected to the second team All-WAC preseason team by the coaches.

Grand Canyon is the preseason favorite to win the WAC championship by vote of the 13 head coaches, who could not vote for their own team. The Lopes received eight first-place votes and totaled 135 points followed by New Mexico State (three first-place votes, 127), Stephen F. Austin (111), Abilene Christian (one, 101), California Baptist (one, 96), Seattle (91), Utah Valley (85), Sam Houston (79), Southern Utah (66), Tarleton (47), UTA (31), Utah Tech (29) and UTRGV (16).

The media also selected Grand Canyon to finish first followed by New Mexico State, SFA, ACU, California Baptist, Sam Houston and Seattle, Utah Valley, Southern Utah, UTA, Tarleton, Utah Tech and UTRGV.

May is one of three starters returning for the Bearkats, who finished fifth with a 13-5 record in the league last season. He was named to the All-WAC defensive team and averaged 5.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.36 steals per game.
