HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkats are one of the hottest teams in the WAC, and will have a chance to add to their collection of recent statement wins with a pair of home matches against UTRGV and NM State.
Each match will be streamed on ESPN+, and fans can also follow each match via live stats and get updates via social media by following @BearkatsVB on Twitter.
Thursday's match with the Vaqueros will open the start of four consecutive matches on the Kats' home floor.
The Bearkats have won three matches in a row and stand at 3-1 in WAC play after picking up wins at both Seattle U and Utah Valley last week. Now they will look to defend their home court once again, starting with the Vaqueros who stand at 15-4 overall and 4-0 in WAC play while sitting at a league-best 55 in the NCAA's first RPI report released earlier this week.
Sam Houston will then host the Aggies, a team that has traditionally been at or near the top of the WAC standings. NM State is off to a 9-6 overall mark this year and has started off 2-2 in league play, most recently falling at home to Utah Tech in four sets.
Krieger Riding Hot Streak Back To Johnson Coliseum
Krieger has been one of the primary forces behind the Bearkats' current 3-match win streak, having totaled 54 kills (3.85 kps) in wins over Stephen F. Austin, Seattle U and Utah Valley. Her 20 scores in the win over SFA tied her career high from 2019 and she immediately followed that up with 19 kills at the Redhawks. But she has also been efficient, hitting .365 in those 3 matches, going over .300 each time.
Dyer Named WAC Defensive Player Of The Week
Coming off her first career double-double at Utah Valley, freshman middle blocker
Madison Dyer was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. She averaged 1.33 blocks per set in the wins with 12 total blocks for the weekend. She finished with 15 kills and 10 total blocks against the Wolverines and comes into this week as one of three players in the WAC to total 10 or more blocks in a single match, joining teammate
McKenzie Morvant who had 11 rejections against McNeese earlier in the season. Dyer was also a weapon offensively for the Kats as she averaged 3.22 kills per set for the weekend and swung at a .365 clip.
Kats Snap Streak With Win Over SFA
Sam Houston had struggled to get back into the win column since a win at A&M-Corpus Christi, but did it in loud fashion with its 5-set win over Stephen F. Austin. The Ladyjacks entered the match with a 13-1 overall record, but fell to the Bearkats for the third straight time over the past two seasons. It is the first time the Kats have won three straight in the Piney Woods rivalry since picking up wins in the 2008, 2009 and 2010 seasons.
Gray Continues To Add To Career Win Total
It was another milestone for 39th-year head coach
Brenda Gray on last Tuesday as she picked up her 750th career victory when the Kats swept their way past Prairie View in the 2022 home opener at Johnson Coliseum. Gray is the fourth-longest tenured current coach in Division I, and is 10th in the nation among active coaches with her 754 career victories.
