Kats ink two high school prep stars

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston men's basketball coach Jason Hooten has added two talented high school players for the 2023-24 season.

The Bearkats signed 6-5 guard Keylon Dorsey and 6-8 forward Torey Alston to national letters of intent this week.

Keylon Dorsey
Dorsey plays for head coach James Johnson at Aldine Eisenhower High School in Houston and AAU for coach John Eurey of the Houston Superstars. He is a three-star recruit ranked as the No. 48 overall shooting guard in the country by 247sports.

According to 247sports, Dorsey is the third highest rated recruit in Sam Houston and is ranked by GASO Texas Basketball Review as the No. 22 prospect in the state.
"We are very excited about the signing of Keylon," Hooten said. "He has the size, length and athleticism that we are looking for in a guard as we move into Conference USA. His skill level and work ethic were also attributes that we felt played well into our style of play. Keylon played in a great AAU program under Coach John Eurey, and for a terrific high school coach James Johnson at Aldine Eisenhower. Not to mention Keylon's father Kirk played at UNT."

Dorsey is a two-time first-team all-district selection and has scored more than 1,000 points in his high school career. He is a two-time KPRC Athlete of the Week and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 2022 Top Performer.

The son of Marcella and Kirk Dorsey, Keylon was the Atlanta Best of the South 2022 Top Performer and a member of the 2021 AAU national runner-up and 2019 AAU national champion teams.

"I chose Sam Houston because they have always believed in me. Even in a time of a rough patch in my recruiting, they never stopped believing in what I could bring to the program," Dorsey said. "(Assistant) coach Mike (Ekanem) stayed consistent and in contact with me and from there, with me it was a done deal. Also, the way my academics were explained on the visit was amazing. I loved everything about the communications department from the broadcast booth all the way to where I would be taking my freshman classes.

"Last but not least would be Coach Hooten. He sees potential in me and with his history and his leadership, I know Coach Hooten will push me to another level on and off the court. He will help better my athletic aspects and help in me growing and becoming a man."

Alston plays for head coach Antonio Lowe at Winston Salem Christian School in Durham, North Carolina and AAU for Team Trezz coach Rod Williams.

He is a two-star recruit ranked as the No. 11 prospect in North Carolina and the fourth-ranked small forward in the state.
"Torey is a young man that we felt has a tremendously high ceiling," Hooten said. "At 6-8, his skill level and athleticism is off the charts. He will fit very well into our ball screen motion and style of play with his versatility. Torey will improve this season at Winstom Salem Christian under Coach Antonio Lowe. His AAU coach Rod Williams has also done a fabulous job of mentoring and giving Torey a window of opportunity."

The son of Annette and Mike Alston, Torey was named to the 2022 North Carolina Christian Athletic Association first team, the 2022 National Association of Christian Athletics All-American first team, the 2022 Hoop Seen All-American first team, 2022 North Carolina Phenom Hoops Top 80 Camp Co Most Valuable Player, 2022 Atlanta Best of South Top Performer, 2022 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions Top Performer and the 2022 Grassroots Basketball Showcase Top Performer.
