MILLSBORO, Del. — The Sam Houston bowling team rallied to win three straight games to put itself in range of qualifying for the championship bracket at the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic on Friday.
Â
The Bearkats are currently in sixth place with 4,602 total pins after going 3-2 in the baker matches on day one. Vanderbilt is in first at 4,747 followed by Delaware State (4,695), North Carolina A&T (4,672), Sacred Heart (4,632) and Fairleigh Dickinson (4,605).
Â
The Bearkats lost their first two matches to Wilmington and Mount St. Mary's before bouncing back with an 876-869 victory over Mercyhurst. They started to turn the page after that.
Â
Sam Houston took down Maryland Eastern Shore 949-833, and the Kats finished the day with their best match, knocking off Monmouth 1,032-946.
Â
"The pattern is playing flat difficult and between the field, shot repeatability issues, and which side of the house you're on, the scores in the fresh are just demanding," head coach Brad Hagen said. "Every pin matters early on because striking isn't a given but no excuse on our part. If ball one is better ball, two if needed will follow.
Â
"We ended well and saved face, but we need to avoid the peaks and valleys and stay focused."
Â
The teams will play traditional competition Saturday beginning at 10:55 a.m. CST with the top four in total pins advancing to the championship round on Sunday at Millsboro Lanes.
