Seven Kats named to All-WAC football teams

HUNTSVILLE — After wrapping up its second and final season in the WAC, the Sam Houston football team was well represented on the all-conference teams, the league released Tuesday.

Sophomore linebacker Kavian Gaither was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Year and three more defensive starters, two offensive starters and one special teams player land on either the first or second teams.

Kavian Gaither — Defensive Player of the Year, First Team
What makes this honor impressive is that Gaither did not become a starter until the fifth game of the season against Eastern Kentucky and he made an instant impact with nine tackles, two for a loss, and a fumble recovery. The sophomore from Waco posted double-digit tackles in the final four games of the season and finished with 79 total tackes, 12 tackles for a loss, three sacks, a forced fumble and three fumble recoveries.

Toby Ndukwe (DL) — First Team
Ndukwe played on a defensive line that held opponents to 106.2 yards per game, an average of 3.2 yards per carry. He was third on the team with 34 tackles, second in tackles for a loss with 10 and had an interception.

BJ Foster (DB) — First Team
Foster was limited to just seven games but made the most of it as a solid cover corner. He recorded 29 tackles, three tackles for a loss, a sack and an interception.

Cody Chrest (WR) — Second Team
Chrest is a two-time All-WAC second-team selection after being a staple in the Bearkat passing attack the past three seasons. He led the team with 36 catches for 548 yards and tied for the lead with two touchdowns.

Jordan Boatman (OL) — Second Team
The Bearkats needed to replace some starters on the offensive line and Boatman filled the void. He helped Sam Houston average 162.3 rushing yards per game.

Ellison Hubbard (DL) — Second Team
Hubbard played in all nine games for the Bearkats this past season and finished with 18 tackles and four for a loss. He also had 1.5 sacks, six quarterback hurries and a forced fumble.

Seth Morgan (K) — Second Team
Morgan was named the WAC Special Teams Player of the Week three times this season. He made four field goals in a win over No. 23 Eastern Kentucky including the game winner. He went 15 for 21 on field goal attempts this season and was a perfect 14 for 14 on extra point attempts.
