Kats add big man from Australia

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston men's basketball coach Jason Hooten is pleased to announce the addition of another skilled forward for the 2023-24 season.

Lewis Rowe has signed a letter of intent to play for the Bearkats, joining a class that also features prep standouts Keylon Dorsey and Torey Alston. Lowe is a 6-10 sophomore from New Mexico Junior College where he is averaging 7.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game for head coach Luke Mackay.

"One of the biggest things we've learned in the last year is how important front-line depth is," Hooten said. "Lewis is all of 6-10 with a tremendous skill level and the ability to dribble, pass and shoot. He gives us another weapon in that position and is a tremendous compliment to the guys we already have there.

"We are extremely excited about having Lewis and his family join ours. Coach Mackay at New Mexico JC will do a tremendous job this season helping Lewis continue to improve."

Rowe is originally from Adelaide, Australia where he played against current Bearkat forward Cameron Huefner growing up. He attended Prince Alfred College for high school and averaged 21 points, 12.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists and shot 36.1 percent from 3-point range as a senior before going to Virginia Military Institute his freshman year.

He was selected to the U16, U18 and U20 South Australian team and was on the U17 Australian national team.
