Soccer strengthens 2023 signing class

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston soccer coach Sonia Curvelo has signed an elite defender to join the Bearkats for the 2023 season.

Graduate transfer Andrea Nugent is the latest addition to the team for the upcoming season. She is a two-time SWAC Defensive Player of the Year who played for Curvelo at Prairie View A&M.

"Our 2023 class continues to strengthen," Curvelo said. "Andrea, I have known for many years. I had an opportunity to coach her for three seasons. She helped the program capture its first conference championship in program history and wants to continue that success here at Sam Houston while studying for her master's.Â

"She knows what it takes to win championships. Her commitment to training and motivating her teammates is top level. She is a true leader and a player that you want on your team. Even though she is a defender on the field, she is very capable of scoring goals in any given game. Any fan that enjoys the game will enjoy watching her play on the field. She understands the culture I want within my program at Sam Houston. I look forward to coaching her for the next two seasons of her eligibility."

A native of Oak Hills, California, Nugent was a multiple first-team All-SWAC selection and earned several defensive and offensive Player of the Week awards. She helped Prairie View win SWAC regular season and tournament championships in 2019 and 2021 and advance to two NCAA Tournament appearances.
