Box Score 2 LAKE CHARLES, La. — The Sam Houston softball team closed out the McNeese Invitational with an 8-5 loss to UTA and an 8-4 setback against UNLV on Saturday.
After falling behind 2-0 against UTA,
Kylie Hobbs got the Bearkats (5-9) on the board with a solo home run to center field to lead off the top of the second. The Mavericks scored again in the bottom of the frame to go back up two.
That seemed to be the theme of the game. Every time Sam Houston scored, UTA answered.
The Bearkats tied the game at 3 in the third.
Brodie Quinlan hit a one-out single and
Sheridan Fisher singled up the middle. Both runners moved over on a fly ball by
Hannah Scheaffer and scored on a two-run single by
Kyndal Kutac.
The Mavs went back up 6-3 with three runs in the bottom of the third. Sam Houston cut the lead to one when Scheaffer hit an RBI single in the fifth and Dunn walked with the bases loaded only to see UTA match the two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Bearkats were the first to strike in the second game to go up 1-0 on UNLV. Quilan drew a two-out walk and scored on a single by Scheaffer in the bottom of the first.
Sam Houston scored two more in the second after Yarotsky walked to begin the frame. She advanced to second on an infield single by
Emily Telg, who later scored on an error, and came home on an RBI single by Fisher.
The Kats added another run in the fourth when Fisher scored on a passed ball after she and Kutac hit back-to-back singles, but three walks, three doubles and a single in the top of the fifth allowed the Rebels to take an 8-4 lead.
Sam Houston will travel to Austin to take on Texas Tuesday at 6 p.m.
