Kats 2nd in division in WAC preseason poll

DENVER — Sam Houston has been picked to finish second in the Western Athletic Conference's Southwest Division in the preseason softball poll.

The Bearkats, who finished 19-31 overall and 14-13 in the Southland Conference last season, received 13 points and one first-place vote. Stephen F. Austin was selected to finish first in the Southwest Division with 16 points and four first-place votes.

This season the conference has separated its 11-team league into two divisions. The five teams based in Texas will form the Southwest Division with Abilene Christian, Tarleton and Lamar predicted to finish behind SFA and Sam Houston.

The six schools based outside of the Lone Star State will compete in the West Division with defending WAC tournament champion Seattle U voted in the top spot followed by New Mexico State, Grand Canyon, Dixie State, California Baptist and Utah Valley.

Sam Houston opens the 2022 season by hosting the Bearkat Classic Feb. 11-13 with games against South Dakota, Wichita State, Dayton and Houston Baptist.
