Kats drop series opener 9-1

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston dropped the series opener to Jacksonville State, falling 9-1 at the Bearkat Softball Complex on Friday.Â
The Bearkats (29-24, 13-12 CUSA) held the Gamecocks (40-13, 22-3 CUSA) scoreless through the first three innings before Jacksonville State broke through in the fourth. Emma Elrod delivered a three-run double down the left field line to give the Gamecocks a 3-0 lead.Â
Sam Houston responded in the bottom half of the inning when Tricia Yarotsky launched a solo home run, cutting the deficit to 3-1.Â
Jacksonville State extended its lead in the fifth inning, plating five runs to pull away. The Gamecocks added one more in the seventh to secure the 9-1 victory.Â
The Bearkats were held scoreless over the final three innings as Jacksonville State closed out the game.Â
Sam Houston and Jacksonville State will continue the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
