
Kats swept to close regular season

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston dropped both games of a doubleheader to Jax State on Saturday afternoon at the Bearkat Softball Complex, closing out the regular season.Â
Jax State 6, Sam Houston 0Â
The Bearkats (29-26, 13-14 CUSA) matched the Gamecocks (42-13, 24-3 CUSA) early, tallying three strikeouts from Tiffany Sanchez in the first inning.Â
Jax State broke through in the second inning with a solo home run to left field by Aria Davis. The Gamecocks added to their lead in the third when Davis delivered a two-run double.Â
Bella Perez sparked a potential rally for Sam Houston with a double in the bottom of the third, but the Bearkats were unable to capitalize.Â
Jax State continued to extend its lead in the fourth on an RBI single up the middle from Emma Elrod and added two more runs in the fifth on a home run by Ashley Phillips.Â
Sanchez recorded five strikeouts over three innings as the Bearkats were held scoreless in a 6-0 loss.Â

The Gamecocks carried their momentum into the second game, loading the bases in the opening inning. Sam Houston starter Makenzi Jenkins worked out of the jam to keep Jax State off the scoreboard.Â
Jenkins held the Gamecocks scoreless through two innings before Kendall Daniel entered in relief in the third. After a walk to Phillips, Jax State pushed across its first run of the game.Â
The Gamecocks broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring six runs. Elrod led off with a solo home run, followed by a two-run single from Makalyn Kyser. Phillips capped the inning with a three-run home run to right field.Â
Sam Houston responded in the fifth with back-to-back RBI singles from Veronica Harrison and Bella Perez to cut into the deficit.Â
The Bearkats held Jax State scoreless in the sixth, but pinch hitter Maddie Mayo added a solo home run in the seventh to extend the lead.Â
Sam Houston plated one run in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to complete the comeback, falling 8-3.Â
The Bearkats finish the regular season eighth in Conference USA and will open conference tournament play Wednesday in Newark, Delaware, against No. 5 seed New Mexico State. First pitch is scheduled for noon.Â
