DALLAS – In the previous 11 years of the Sam Houston bowling program, they had never competed in an ITC event. Sunday they came home as Dallas Sectional champions.
The victory at USA Bowl advances the Bearkats to the ITC National Championships April 20-April 23, at Stardust Bowl in Addison, Illinois.
"For this to be the first time we've ever taken part of this competition, this is pretty special," said head coach Brad Hagen. "We had a great weekend of bowling from beginning to end, and I'so proud of the girls for going out and grinding over 64 games."
The format for the ITC Sectional is different than what the Bearkats typically play in NCAA play. As opposed to competing head to head against other schools, all the teams bowl 64 baker games. After 64 games, the top for teams with the highest total pinfall.
The Bearkats got off to a strong start on Saturday and never looked back. They were the overall leaders after the first day of competition. On Sunday, they continued that momentum, winning the title by 167 pins over Tulane. SFA finished third, 176 pins back. The final advancing team was defending ITC National Champion Wichita State.
"I think it certainly helped us, competing in a venue we are familiar with," Hagen said. "Several of the girls were with us in 2019 when we won the Southland Championship here, so it's a place we've also had a lot of success."
The Bearkats will join 15 other schools at the ITC Championship in Addison, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.
