Kats erupt for 17 runs in DH sweep

HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston softball team opened WAC play with a doubleheader sweep of Lamar on Friday at the Bearkat Softball Complex.

The Bearkats (7-10 overall, 2-0) trounced the Cardinals (4-12, 0-2) 10-0 in five innings in game one. Sam Houston took the nightcap 7-2.

Hannah Scheaffer got the Kats on the board with an RBI single in the first inning of game one. Elia Hebel launched a two-run home run in the second as Sam Houston broke open the game with an RBI double by Scheaffer and a grand slam by Brailey Wasik to make it 8-0.

Kylie Hobbs ripped the Bearkats' third home run of the game in the fourth, a two-run blast to left center.

Regan Dunn picked up the win in the circle to improve to 2-2 on the season. She allowed three hits in five innings with six strikeouts.

Game two started as a pitching duel with the Bearkats scoring the only run through three innings on a throwing error.

Sam Houston pulled away in the fourth when Tricia Yarotsky laced an RBI triple into right center. Emily Telg drove in a run on an RBI single and Brodie Quinlan drilled a pitch over the wall in leftfield to make it 5-0.

Wasik continued her impressive day at the plate in the fifth. She hit a rocket off the scoreboard in left to make it 7-0 before Lamar finally scored a pair of runs in the sixth.

Mika Vento earned the win in the circle to push her record to 2-5. She allowed two runs on two hits with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Wasik pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.

The series wraps up with a single game Saturday at noon.
