Late home runs doom Kats in series finale

NACOGDOCHES — Two late home runs proved to be the difference as Sam Houston dropped the finale of a Western Athletic Conference series to Stephen F. Austin 10-6 on Saturday.

The Bearkats fell to 4-8 in league play and 10-27 overall while the Ladyjacks improved to 10-2 and 18-16.

Sam Houston got behind early when the Ladyjacks scored four runs in the second inning on three hits and an error.

The Bearkats answered with two runs in the third when Ellie Grill hit a one-out triple and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Sheridan Fisher. Back-to-back singles by Kyndal Kutac and Elia Hebel set up an RBI double by Kylie Hobbs.

After SFA got a run back in the bottom of the third, Sam Houston took the lead in fourth.

Taylor Bachmeyer and Hannah Scheaffer both singled with one out then Grill singled and all three came around to score thanks to a throwing error that made it all the way to the left field corner.

The Bearkats took the lead when Tricia Yarotsky ripped an RBI double to left center field, but SFA hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth and a three-run shot in the sixth to comeback to win.
