Kats ink 6-3 guard from Philadelphia

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston men's basketball head coach Jason Hooten has added another versatile guard to the 2022-23 signing class.

Ron Mitchell Jr. from Philadelphia signed his letter of intent to play for the Bearkats after a stellar season at Colby Community College in Kansas this past season. He had previously played two seasons at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.

"We are extremely excited to add Ron to the mix," Hooten said. "We feel like his experience of already playing two years of D1 basketball will pay huge dividends. He is an explosive scorer from many different levels and a very capable lock down defender.

"Ron will give us tremendous depth, competition and scoring from the guard position that we haven't had in a long time."

Mitchell averaged 18.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.75 assists per game for Colby. He was also an 82 percent shooter from the line.

As a freshman at UMass-Lowell, Mitchell appeared in 30 games and made 15 starts. He averaged 8.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 26.0 minutes played per game.

Mitchell, who will have two years of eligibility, appeared in 19 of the River Hawks' 23 games as a sophomore and averaged 3.7 points and 2.2 rebounds.
