HUNTSVILLE – Non-conference play comes to an end for the Sam Houston volleyball team this weekend when it goes to Waco for three matches as part of the Baylor Classic.
None of the three matches will be available on video stream, but live stats will be available for each. Fans can also follow each match via live stats and get updates via social media by following @BearkatsVB on Twitter.
The weekend schedule is a slight shift from the norm with a match on Thursday and two on Friday to complete the weekend. The Kats will open up the weekend against former Southland rival McNeese in what will be only the third non-conference matchup against the Cowgirls since 1991 and the first time they have met as non-conference rivals since 1985, prior to the Kats even moving up to the Division I ranks.
Sam Houston will then battle the ranked Bears before squaring off against Tulsa, a team the Kats took down in five sets a year ago in Arlington at the Maverick Classic.
Kats To Face Ranked Baylor
Sam Houston has three matches on the slate for the weekend, but will battle a nationally-ranked opponent on Friday when it faces off against Baylor. The Bears are ranked No. 14 in the nation in the AVCA poll, and it makes BU the first ranked opponent the Kats have faced since a 3-1 loss at BYU early in the 2019 season.
Gray Picks Up 750th Career Win vs Prairie View
It was another milestone for 39th-year head coach
Brenda Gray on last Tuesday as she picked up her 750th career victory when the Kats swept their way past Prairie View in the 2022 home opener at Johnson Coliseum. Gray is the fourth-longest tenured current coach in Division I, and is 10th in the nation among active coaches with her 751 career victories.
Kats in midst of long stretch away from Johnson Coliseum
The Kats put on a show last week in its sweep of Prairie View, its home opener for 2022. But that is the last time SHSU fans see the Kats on their home floor for a while as are in the midst of a stretch of 11 consecutive road matches. The Kats will not be at home again until hosting rival Stephen F. Austin on September 24.
Baker Nearing 1,000 Career Digs
It has not taken long for libero
Hannah Baker to rise up the ranks of career digs at Sam Houston and is beginning her approach of a career milestone of her own, now with 980. With 20 more digs she would become the 19th player in Bearkat history with 1,000 digs.
