Kats drop midweek match at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION – The Sam Houston Bearkats took Texas A&M to extra points twice, but could not outlast the Aggies on their home court Tuesday afternoon, falling 3-0 at Reed Arena.

The Kats (3-5) got 11 kills from Madison Dyer and 22 assists from Analise Lucio, but could not hold back the Aggie offensive attack with three A&M players finishing in double-figure kills.

The Aggies hit .346 for the match, led by 18 kills from freshman Logan Lednicky and 13 from Caroline Meuth.

Sam Houston held them to just .167 hitting in the final set and finished with seven blcocks in the 3-set affair, getting a team-high four from McKenzie Morvant.

Both teams were on fire offensively in the opening set, and it showed as the teams went into extra points to decide it. The Kats hit .344 in the set, led by five kills from Dyer, but the Aggies were even hotter as they hit .425 as a team with eight kills coming from Logan Lednicky, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week.

The Aggies were able to keep that momentum up in Set 2, hitting .464 behind another five kills from Lednicky. Sam Houston was still right there at 15-12 after Krieger's fifth kill of the match and an ace from Avery Fowler, but Texas A&M responded with five straight points of its own, scoring 10 of the final 12 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

It looked as though the Aggies would cruise to a sweep in Set 3 as they led 21-16 late in the set before the Kats went on a 6-0 run that included a set-tying ace from Hannah Baker and a go-ahead kill from Dyer.

Sam Houston then got itself into set-point opportunities twice, but were thwarted each time. Catherine Krieger, who finished with seven kills for the match fought off a pair of match-point tries with late kills before the Aggies were able to get the final two points to close it out.

The Kats will stay on the road over the weekend when they go to San Marcos for a trio of matches at the Bobcat Invitational, starting Friday morning against Ole Miss.
