Series vs the Demon Deacons: First Meeting

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston volleyball team will square off against a tough field this weekend as it travels to San Marcos for three matches in the Bobcat Invitational.

The Kats have played a daunting schedule so far in 2022 and it will only continue this weekend at Strahan Coliseum. Both Wake Forest and Texas State come in with winning records, while Ole Miss holds an 0-4 record, but three of those losses come to nationally-ranked teams, including No. 9 Illinois and No. 2 Nebraska.

All three opponents finished strong in the final RPI in 2021 with Texas State finishing at 51, Ole Miss at 57 and Wake Forest at 107.

Freshmen Making Impact
The Kats have their fair share of returners, but are also getting a big impact early on from freshmen Madison Dyer and Hailey Heider. Dyer has been arguably the most dynamic player on the roster through eight matches, tying for the team lead with an average of 2.81 kills per set while hitting at a .299 clip. Meanwhile, Heider's 222 attacks are tied for a team best with the Oregon native being one of three hitters averaging at least two kills per set this year.

Gray Picks Up 750th Career Win vs Prairie View
It was another milestone for 39th-year head coach Brenda Gray on last Tuesday as she picked up her 750th career victory when the Kats swept their way past Prairie View in the 2022 home opener at Johnson Coliseum. Gray is the fourth-longest tenured current coach in Division I, and is 10th in the nation among active coaches with her 751 career victories.

Kats in midst of long stretch away from Johnson Coliseum
The Kats put on a show last week in its sweep of Prairie View, its home opener for 2022. But that will be the last time SHSU fans see the Kats on their home floor for a while as are in the midst of a stretch of 11 consecutive road matches. The Kats will not be at home again until hosting rival Stephen F. Austin on September 24.

Baker Nearing 1,000 Career Digs
It has not taken long for libero Hannah Baker to rise up the ranks of career digs at Sam Houston and is beginning her approach of a career milestone of her own, now with 941. With 59 more digs she would become the 19th player in Bearkat history with 1,000 digs.

Krieger, Baker Named To All-Tournament Team At Islander Classic
The Kats landed a pair of players on the all-tournament team in Corpus Christi with Catherine Krieger and Baker both getting honors. Krieger finished the weekend as the Kats' top hitter, averaging 2.66 kills per set while Baker averaged 5.00 digs per set, including 22 in the win over the Islanders.
